🔑 What Are Passkeys? (No Tech Degree Required)

If you've seen a message recently saying "Would you like to save a passkey for this site?" — and you clicked Not Now because you weren't sure — this is for you. Let's break it down in plain language.

First — what's wrong with regular passwords?

Passwords work, but they have real problems. Most people reuse the same few passwords everywhere, which means one hacked site can unlock all your accounts. And criminals have gotten very good at building fake websites that look real, tricking people into typing their password (this is called "phishing").

What is a passkey?

A passkey is a way to log in without ever typing a password. Instead of a word you memorize, your phone or computer holds a tiny secret "key" that it shares automatically when you want to log in — only after you confirm it's really you, usually with your fingerprint, your face, or your PIN.

Think of it like a hotel key card. The card has a code on it — you don't know what that code is, and you don't need to. You just tap it to the door and it opens. Passkeys work the same way. Your device holds the "code," the website reads it, and you're in.

Are passkeys safe?

They're actually much safer than passwords. Two big reasons:

  • They can't be phished. Even if a criminal tricks you into visiting a fake website, your passkey won't work there. It's mathematically tied to the real website it was made for — nowhere else.
  • They can't be stolen in a data breach. The website never stores your passkey — only your device does. So even if a company gets hacked, there's nothing to steal.

How do I start?

The next time a website you use — Gmail, Amazon, Apple, your bank — offers to set up a passkey, just say yes. Here's what happens:

  1. The website asks: "Create a passkey for this account?"
  2. You confirm with your fingerprint, face, or device PIN
  3. Done. Next time you log in, no password needed
Your fingerprint never leaves your device. The website only gets a mathematical "yes, this is the right person" — not your actual fingerprint data. Apple and Google were very careful about this.

What if I get a new phone?

Good news — passkeys sync automatically. If you use an iPhone or Mac, they sync through your Apple ID. On Android, through your Google account. Getting a new device doesn't mean starting over.

Do I still need to remember anything?

No. That's the whole point. Your device remembers the passkey for you. The only thing you need is the same fingerprint or PIN you already use to unlock your phone. If you can unlock your phone, you can use passkeys.
